DESCRIPTION OF COURSE
This class will focus on expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language as well as understanding American Deaf History/Culture/Literature, Idioms/Slang and vocabulary. Weekly interactive in class activities will allow you to practice and improve cultural awareness, grammatical and conversational skills and vocabulary. We will be learning: writing in ASL Gloss, Deaf History/Culture/and Literature, Slang, Idioms, vocabulary, conversations, Classifiers, Music (song), some interpreting, going to deaf events or listening to guest speakers and research.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
CULTURAL AWARENESS
Students will learn about Deaf History/Culture/Literature, idioms and slang, vocabulary as well as understand language meaning. There will also be a chance as extra credit to go to deaf events. We will also have guest speakers (deaf).
GRAMMATICAL/CONVERSATIONAL SKILLS
Students will be able to describe stories/activities, interpret/understand 1- 2 minute video clips, write and read about Deaf History/Culture/Literature, and write in ASL gloss.
Students will focus on three aspects of ASL: some interpreting, culture and music.
VOCABULARY SKILLS
Practice targeted vocabulary from ASL related materials with Deaf History/Culture/Literature.

EXPECTATIONS
ASL is a visual language. Eyes on the teacher at all times is a MUST!
There will be NO VOICE; please refrain from using your voice and YOU MUST SIGN!!!

GRADING
▪ Assignments: 40% of your grade.
Homework

Projects: individual/groups
▪ Expressive and Receptive/Participation: 60% of your grade.

- Do your best- we are all here to learn
- Food and water are allowed but please clean up!
- Be on time, complete work on time and make up any missed work- ASL is a 3-D
missed work from being sick, sporting events, etc.
- Participate in class- especially when called on and in group/individual activities
- Please use the restroom before/after class
- Leave ALL electronic items out of sight- I will tell you when you will need them
- Ask questions- please don’t feel embarrassed if you do not know something, ASK
- Tardy Policy- as seen in the Student Handbook; will be followed
- NO BULLYING OR CYBERBULLYING-that is an automatic referral to your AP and possibly DAEP
- Be polite- we are not going to make fun of anyone; keep your rude comments to
