DESCRIPTION OF COURSE
This class will focus on expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language as well as understanding American Deaf History/Culture. Weekly interactive in class activities will allow you to practice and improve cultural awareness, grammatical and conversational skills and vocabulary. In each units: 5-8, we will be learning: Telling About Activities, Storytelling, Describing People and Things, Making Requests and Asking for Advice. We will also be doing songs in sign language to enhance the focus on expressive and receptive skills.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
CULTURAL AWARENESS
Students will learn about Deaf History as well as understand language meaning.
GRAMMATICAL/CONVERSATIONAL SKILLS
Students will be able to introduce themselves and exchange information about themselves in ASL. They will be able to converse about activities, holidays, countries, describing people and things, asking for help/making requests, numbers 1-10,000, letters, writing in ASL Gloss and fingerspelling.
Students will participate in dialogues while emphasizing ASL features: facial expression, body language, role shifting, hand shapes, eye gaze, mouth morphemes and head movements; communicating in ASL using time, topic, comment.
Students will focus on two aspects of ASL: storytelling and culture.
VOCABULARY SKILLS
Practice targeted vocabulary from ASL I and units for ASL II.

EXPECTATIONS
ASL is a visual language. Eyes on the teacher at all times is a MUST!
There will be NO VOICE; please refrain from using your voice and YOU MUST SIGN!!!
- Do your best- we are all here to learn
- Food and water are allowed, but please clean up!
- Be on time, complete work on time and make up any missed work- ASL is a 3-D
missed work from being sick, sporting events, etc with me.
- Participate in class- especially when called on and in group/individual activities
- Please use the restroom before/after class
- Leave ALL electronic items out of sight- I will tell you when you will need them
- Be polite- we are not going to make fun of anyone; keep your rude comments to yourself and respect each other; DO NOT LOAD ANYTHING FROM YOUR IPAD ONTO THE BOARD WITHOUT PERMISSION. IF YOU DO THIS, IT RESULTS IN AN AUTOMATIC 0 FOR THAT DAY.
- NO BULLYING OR CYBERBULLYING-that is an automatic referral to your AP or possibly DAEP
- Ask questions- please don’t feel embarrassed if you do not know something, ASK
- Tardy Policy- as seen in Student Handbook will be followed

▪ Assignments: 40% of your grade.

▪ Expressive and Receptive/Participation: 60% of your grade.
